About the Artist

A love of colored glass, a lifetime in the making

My name is Charles Tanner, and I create stained-glass-style artwork for public and private enjoyment.

My love of colored glass began when I was an impressionable 10-year-old. On one of my father’s regular business trips, I was fortunate enough to tour the Corning Glass Works museum in Corning, New York. The colors, the light, and the craftsmanship left a lasting impression — one that still influences the fantasy creations I make today.

At Broken Glass Studio, I recycle, reuse, and repurpose old wooden windows and picture frames as the foundation for my work. Into them I assemble recycled and waste colored glass, bottles, dishes, and stained-glass scraps, giving discarded materials a new life as art.

Every piece is one of a kind, and as light passes through the glass, it can reveal something a little different from morning to evening. I truly hope you’ll enjoy my current offerings for sale.

Sincerely,
Tanner

Fantasy Geometric Series

No. 061

$285.00 Available

A bold geometric composition set in a century-old wooden window. At its heart, a deep emerald diamond of broken glass is ringed by a golden chevron, flanked by tall panels of clear, ice-textured glass and confetti-flecked borders. Sapphire-blue triangles anchor the base, with ember-red accents at the corners and along the bottom rail. Hang it where the light can reach it and the colors ignite — green, gold, and blue glowing through glass that lived a whole other life before this one.

Fantasy Forest Series

No. 089

$365.00 Available

A mountain forest daydream spread across the three panes of a century-old wooden window. Five tall pines rise in feathers of rainbow glass — green, crimson, gold, and sapphire — against pale, misty peaks, while a stream of crushed blue glass tumbles over the rocks below. Look closer and the scene keeps its secrets: a tiny white owl watching from the left pane, a pink butterfly drifting through the center, a native black bear ambling beneath the pines, and a golden crescent moon overhead. The frame itself is signed and inscribed by the artist: “Tanner 2026 — Forest Series #089 — Broken Glass Studio, Whittier, NC.”

Fantasy Geometric Series

No. 059

$235.00 Available

A crisp, symmetrical geometric design in a century-old white-painted window. A peak of deep green broken glass rises at the center, layered beneath chevrons of silver glitter glass and sunny yellow flecked with sapphire. Ember-red bands glow along the top and sides, cool blue crushed glass pools in the lower corners, and a calm panel of clear, ice-cracked glass anchors the base. The frame carries the artist’s own hand in gold — “Tanner 2026,” “Geometric 059,” and his motto, “Ars Gratia Artis”: art for art’s sake.

A Smoky Mountain forest in miniature. Four tall pines in rainbow-feathered glass stand over a tumbling stream of crushed blue glass, with pale, misty peaks behind and a green crescent moon overhead. Fantasy Forest Series

No. 095

$285.00 Available

The wide valley of the forest series. Five rainbow pines rise against icy, light-filled peaks — a tiny owl keeps watch from the left-hand tree, a small butterfly drifts through the center, and a black bear ambles along the valley floor above a stream of crushed blue glass. Overhead hangs the green crescent moon. The wormy chestnut frame’s rustic grain is part of the picture, and hung in a window the whole valley lights up.

A black bear steals the scene — caught mid-stride crossing a moss-green log above a stream of crushed ice-blue glass. Four rainbow pines rise around him, a small owl watches from the right-hand tree, a butterfly drifts past, and a green crescent moon hangs over the pale peaks.
